THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUNG PEOPLE: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES

The rapid development of digital technologies and the widespread availability of the internet have transformed the ways in which young people communicate, learn, socialize, and perceive the world. Social media platforms have become an essential part of modern youth culture, influencing various aspects of personal development, education, psychological well-being, social relationships, and identity formation. Although social media provides significant opportunities for communication, access to information, self-expression, and educational development, excessive and uncontrolled use may also contribute to psychological distress, social comparison, cyberbullying, sleep disturbances, reduced academic performance, and problems associated with digital dependency. This article examines the multifaceted impact of social media on young people from psychological, educational, social, and cultural perspectives. It explores the positive and negative consequences of social media engagement, identifies the factors that determine its influence, and discusses the importance of digital literacy, responsible online behavior, and parental and educational guidance. The article adopts a qualitative, interdisciplinary literature-based approach, drawing on established academic theories and previous research in the fields of communication, psychology, and education. Particular attention is given to the relationship between social media use and mental health, the development of social identity, academic achievement, and interpersonal communication. The findings discussed in the article suggest that the effects of social media cannot be classified as entirely positive or negative because they depend on the nature, purpose, intensity, and context of its use. The article concludes that promoting balanced digital engagement and strengthening young people's critical thinking and media literacy are essential for ensuring the healthy integration of social media into contemporary society.
