The Relationship of Physical Activity, Sleep Quality, and Socioeconomic Status of Parents to Adolescent Mental Health
Introduction: Mental health is a state in which a person is able to recognize their abilities, cope with normal life stresses, work productively, and contribute to their environment. Mental health is influenced by complex interrelated factors. This research aims to determine the relationship between physical activity, sleep quality, and socioeconomic status of parents and mental health in adolescents. Methods: This study used a correlational cross-sectional design involving 102 adolescents from State Senior High School 1 Tanjung, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate frequency distributions and bivariate analysis with Kendall’s tau test. Results: The findings showed that the majority of respondents had high mental health levels (61.8%), high physical activity (47.1%), good sleep quality (52.9%), and high parental socioeconomic status (64.7%). Significant positive relationships were identified between physical activity and mental health (p < 0.001, r = 0.520), sleep quality and mental health (p < 0.001, r = 0.458), and parental socioeconomic status and mental health (p < 0.001, r = 0.611). Conclusion: This study demonstrates significant associations between physical activity, sleep quality, parental socioeconomic status, and adolescent mental health. Adolescents are encouraged to maintain regular physical activity and good sleep habits to support mental well-being. Further research using longitudinal or cohort designs with larger and more diverse samples is recommended to enhance generalizability.
