Evaluating the Visibility and Utilization of Media Sensitization Messages of Cholera Control by Residents of Awka North LGA of Anambra State

Cholera remains a significant public health challenge in many parts of Nigeria, especially with the recent outbreak of the disease in most parts of the country. Effective communication strategies are essential for its control and prevention. This study evaluates the visibility and utilization of media sensitization messages on cholera control among residents of Awka North Local Government Area (LGA) in Anambra State, Nigeria. This research employs quantitative surveys to assess the extent to which residents are exposed to, understand, and apply cholera prevention messages disseminated through various media channels. The study was anchored on two theories the Health belief model and the Agenda-Setting theory. Data were collected from a sample of 383 residents across different communities within Awka North LGA. Findings suggest that while a significant proportion of residents are aware of cholera prevention messages, the visibility of these messages varies across different media platforms, with radio and village health workers being the most prominent. However, the study also reveals gaps in message comprehension and practical application, particularly among populations with lower literacy levels and limited access to certain media types. The findings underscore the need for tailored communication strategies that consider local context, cultural factors, and media accessibility to enhance the effectiveness of cholera control efforts in Awka North LGA. The study concludes by recommending more inclusive and context-specific media campaigns, along with increased community engagement, to improve the visibility and utilization of cholera control messages in the area.
