How Annotation Helps to Create AI Systems: A Practitioner's View from the Data Pipeline
Every AI system begins as raw material: unlabelled video, images, audio, and text that mean nothing to a machine on their own. Annotation is the work that converts that raw material into training data — the step where human beings show the system, example by example, what things are and how they should be understood. This article explains, from the perspective of a practitioner who has annotated video, contributed AI content, performed quality control, and led an annotation team, how annotation helps create AI systems in practice: how it turns raw data into lessons, what the main kinds of annotation each teach a system, why difficult and ambiguous cases are where annotation matters most, and how annotation continues after training as the feedback loop that finds and fixes a system's mistakes. It closes with what good annotation practice looks like when it is treated as skilled, consequential work.
