Effect of silica content and layer configuration on the performance of epoxy composites reinforced with guava and Indian cork fibers

Abstract Epoxy composites are widely used in industries such as construction, automobile, marine and aerospace. These composites are cost-effective, environment friendly, and have good strength while considering their weight. However, since their strength is not enough compared to conventional materials used in several industrial applications, it would be noteworthy to develop a composite with improved performance. In this investigation an effort was made to manufacture composites using two different fibers, guava and Indian cork. Composites were developed using the conventional hand layup procedure. Two different types of composites containing tri-layers were prepared, G/I/G (Guava/Indian cork/Guava) and I/G/I (Indian cork/Guava/Indian cork). Their Mechanical strength was assessed by conducting tensile, flexural and impact tests. Results revealed that G/I/G composite exhibited higher strength due to the higher strength of guava fiber and its double concentration relative to Indian cork fiber. In addition, the G/I/G composite was reinforced with silica particles with different quantities and its performance was assessed. G/I/G-2wt% silica composite recorded maximum (Tensile: 55 MPa; flexural: 70 MPa; Impact: 10.2 kJ/m 2 ; hardness: 82 Shore D). Further more, the G/I/G-3wt% silica composite exhibited the least water uptake. Thus, the present research promotes that G/I/G-2wt% composite is suitable material for construction, automobile, and marine applications.
