Ro-Ro rolling forward or hitting a wall? Navigating its usage and challenges from a global perspective

The logistics sector in India has been growing in recent years, even at a faster rate than the global average annual growth rate. The sector, though, is plagued by its own set of challenges, including infrastructure deficits, high logistics costs, and undesirable levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) mode of transport along the railways (in the form of piggybacking) and coastal shipping is a very effective and unique mode of multimodal transport, which can minimize transport cost as well as emission levels. The aim of this study is to carry out a systematic literature review (SLR) of peer-reviewed research articles to understand the work done in reducing transportation costs and emission reduction using the Ro-Ro mode of transport around the world, and particularly in India.
