Antibacterial properties of a polymercoated mesh hernial prosthesis in vitro
The article addresses the problem of infectious complications associated with the use of mesh hernia prostheses, which are caused by the formation of microbial biofilm on the prosthesis fibers. The aim of the study was to evaluate in vitro the antibacterial activity of various polymer coatings based on chitosan with glycerol against S. aureus and E. coli. The study demonstrated that all samples impregnated with antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and gentamicin) exhibited 100% bactericidal activity within 2 hours. Without antibiotics, the coating containing 10% glycerol showed the best effect, with a bactericidal index of 57,2% for S. aureus and 80,7% for E. coli. The developed coating, especially with 10% glycerol, is promising for the prevention of infections in herniology.
