Comparative Analysis of Single 3D Miniplate Versus Conventional Double Miniplates in Anterior Mandibular Fracture Fixation
Introduction : Treatment option for anterior mandibular (symphysis & parasymphysis) fractures range from close reduction to open reduction and internal fixation with miniplate or compression bone plate or lag screw. Present study was undertaken to evaluate the outcome & comparison of single 3D miniplate vs conventional double miniplates as a treatment modality for the management of anterior mandibular fracture. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcome & comparison of single 3D miniplate vs conventional double miniplates as a treatment modality for the management of anterior mandibular fracture. Materials and Methods: This observational cross section study was conducted among 20 patients in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of Dhaka Dental College Hospital, Bangladesh from January 2019 to December 2020. Casaes were selected according to inclusion & exclusion criteria with anterior mandibular (symphysis & parasymphysis) fractures indicated for open reduction and internal fixation using one single 3D mini plate fixed by 4 screws for group I, and 2 conventional mini plates fixed by 10 screws for group II. Throughout the study patients were evaluated preoperatively, intra-operatively and postoperatively for various parameters. Results: All anterior mandibular fractures went to good bone union after surgery. The mean operating time and cost of fixation material for single 3D miniplate was less compared to conventional double miniplates (due to its configuration, easy adaptation and less screw) which was statistically significant. The other parameter such as postoperative occlusion, stability, postsurgical complications were statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Single 3D miniplate has same stabilization due to its configuration as conventional double miniplates in fixation of anterior mandibular fractures. But use of Single 3D miniplate is less invasive, cost effective, less time consuming, has less complication than conventional miniplate. Medicine Today 2026, Vol.38 (2): 247-251
