What Hip-Hop Knows About Facilitation: The VERSE Framework for Corporate Learning

Facilitators have access to extensive guidance on strategies for engaging adult learners, yet less attention has been given to how established strategies can be intentionally organized across a live learning experience. This conceptual article introduces VERSE, a hip-hop-inspired framework derived through an integrative synthesis of adult learning theory, facilitation scholarship, hip-hop pedagogy, and contemporary learning science. VERSE proposes a timing-based pedagogical architecture that organizes established learning principles into five interconnected elements: Vibe, Engage, Reveal, Spin, and End. Vibe and Engage orient facilitators to learner conditions and purposeful openings; Reveal and Spin function as recurring practices for narrative meaning making and varied reinforcement; and End focuses attention on retrieval, reflection, and application. Rather than prescribing a fixed sequence or introducing new facilitation techniques, VERSE makes explicit the placement and relationship of facilitation decisions across the learning experience. The article examines the conceptual foundations of the framework, illustrates its application in a corporate learning context, and identifies implications for facilitation practice and future empirical research.
