LGBTIQ+ political leadership typology in Latin America and the Caribbean: a cartographic exploration (2015–2025)

The central argument of this paper is that the most visible LGBTIQ+ political leaders, those that compete for elected office, are supported by other individual and collective leaders, such as civil society organizations and consortiums. It is our purpose to demonstrate that there is a multiplicity of political leadership operating at the local, national and regional levels, working synergistically, to promote political participation among people of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity. In order to support this argument, the authors propose the establishment of a LGBTIQ+ political leaderships typology in the Latin America and the Caribbean region from 2015 to 2025. Along with the typology, the authors map the presence of these leaders, showing that their dynamics are highly specific and closely aligned with the territory they inhabit.
