Itskovich T.V. Prayers generated by artificial intelligence: linguistic and textual features
The religious functional style constitutes an open system that is continuously enriched by texts belonging to various genres, both at the core and on the periphery of the style, including sermons, prayers, akathists, announcements, and minutes. A distinct group within this system is formed by texts generated by artificial intelligence. The material of the study comprises prayer texts representing the Abrahamic religions and Buddhism generated by ChatGPT. The aim of the study was to conduct a comparative analysis of AI-generated texts and the prototext of the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father”). The categorical-textual method employed in the study, aimed at analysing the explicit manifestation of the textual categories of composition and evaluation, made it possible to draw the following conclusions. Prayer texts representing different religions — Jewish, Orthodox Christian, Catholic, Protestant, New Apostolic, Buddhist, and Muslim — generated by artificial intelligence exhibit distinctive genre-forming features. They follow a typical compositional model and are structured in accordance with the communicative intentions of petition, thanksgiving, and praise. Prayers on the same subject differ not only in their formal features — particularly in their forms of address to different sacred figures depending on the religion — but also in their content, reflecting the specific doctrines of the respective religious traditions.
