Changes in Migratory and Breeding Status of One Great Egret Over Eight Years
GPS and accelerometer data from a Great Egret (Ardea alba) tagged in September 2018 on Tomales Bay, Marin County, California, U.S.A. were recorded for eight breeding seasons. Following the first two breeding seasons after being outfitted with a GPS tag this individual migrated south (1535 km and 472 km, respectively) but remained resident in subsequent years, consistent with an age-related shift in migratory behavior. Visual observations corroborated accelerometer data suggesting a posture appropriate for incubating/brooding during the 2021 breeding season, during which this individual appears to have successfully raised chicks to fledging. GPS and accelerometer data for subsequent years indicate breeding attempts.
