Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Brazilian Version of the Modified New Mobility Score (NMS-BR) for Older Adults Following Hip Fracture

Background: Mobility recovery following hip fracture is a key determinant of quality of life and independence in older age. The New Mobility Score (NMS) is a practical and widely used instrument for assessing functional mobility among older adults in hospital and rehabilitation settings; however, its use in Brazil requires translation and cross-cultural adaptation. Objective: To translate and culturally adapt the New Mobility Score (NMS) into Brazilian Portuguese (NMS-BR) for use among older adults recovering from hip fracture. Methods: This study describes the translation and cross-cultural ad-aptation of the New Mobility Score into Brazilian Portuguese (NMS-BR). The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process included forward translation, synthesis of trans-lations, back-translation and expert committee review. The evaluation of the measurement properties of the NMS-BR, including pre-test, reliability, validity, and predictive validity will be conducted in future research. Results: The NMS was successfully translated and cross-culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese, resulting in the NMS-BR version. Linguistic and cultural adaptations were identified during the translation and consensus procedures, mainly involving the administration instructions and supplementary application materials, without affecting the conceptual equivalence of the instrument. Expert evaluation demonstrated that the NMS-BR is clear, relevant, and feasible for use in the Brazilian clinical context. Conclusion: The NMS-BR showed satisfactory face and content validity, indicating that it is culturally appropriate and suitable for assessing mobility in older adults following hip fracture. The instrument requires further testing, including assessments of reliability, validity, responsiveness, and predictive validity.
