Yoga-Driven Emotional Resilience and Career Adaptability among Youth: A Conceptual Framework with Special Reference to Haryana
Abstract “Career transitions represent a critical and psychologically challenging phase in the developmental journey of young individuals. The transition from academic education to professional employment, preparation for competitive examinations, career-related indecisiveness, unemployment, workplace adjustment, and evolving socio-economic demands often expose young people to considerable psychological pressure, emotional instability, stress, and uncertainty. Haryana, witnessing substantial economic development, industrial growth, urban expansion, and educational transformation, provides an important socio-economic setting for examining these challenges among its youth. Although expanding educational opportunities have created diverse career pathways, they have also intensified employment competition, concerns regarding job security, and expectations of professional achievement. In this context, yoga and meditation are increasingly recognised as accessible, culturally embedded, and potentially effective approaches to strengthening psychological health and emotional well-being. Nevertheless, scholarly discussions have largely concentrated on their therapeutic applications in reducing stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, while their broader contribution to developing emotional resilience during career-related transitions remains relatively underexplored. The present conceptual study examines the potential contribution of yoga and meditation towards enhancing emotional resilience among young adults in Haryana through an integrated theoretical perspective encompassing Resilience Theory, the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Positive Psychology, Self-Determination Theory, and Yogic Psychology. It conceptualises yogic practices as important resources for developing mindfulness, emotional regulation, self-awareness, psychological flexibility, positive thinking, and effective coping strategies. These interconnected mechanisms may enable young individuals to interpret career-related challenges constructively, manage uncertainty, and adapt more effectively to changing professional circumstances. Accordingly, the study develops a multidimensional conceptual framework illustrating the interrelationships among career-transition stressors, yoga and meditation practices, resilience-enhancing psychological mechanisms, and overall psychological well-being. The paper further highlights the potential integration of yoga-based programmes into universities, higher education institutions, career guidance and counselling centres, vocational training initiatives, and youth employment policies. The proposed framework contributes to the interdisciplinary understanding of yoga, psychological resilience, and career development while providing a theoretical foundation for future empirical investigations and evidence-informed policy interventions aimed at strengthening the emotional well-being and adaptive capabilities of young adults in Haryana.
