Case Report: Open versus stapled laparoscopic cecal wedge resection for appendiceal orifice polyps: technical considerations from two cases
For polyps at the appendiceal orifice that are not amenable to endoscopic resection, CELS (combined endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery) or surgical resection is required. Surgical options range from appendectomy to right hemicolectomy, including appendectomy with partial cecal resection (cecal wedge resection). Laparoscopic cecal wedge resection can be performed using either an open or a stapled technique, with the latter being more commonly employed. This article presents the selection criteria for these two techniques and the key operative points of each approach.
