Existential–Humanistic Self-Development Theory: A Three-Pillar Framework

This article consolidates two decades of work on existential–humanistic self-development theory (EHSDT) and advances a new conceptual architecture to enhance its accessibility for scholars and emerging humanistic psychologists. A three-pillar framework is presented. This framework addresses what develops, how development occurs, and the direction of development. The first pillar articulates EHSDT’s ontological grounding in existential–humanistic thought, conceptualizing development as the unfolding lived meaning of a person’s nexus of world-relations (their being-and-becoming-in-the-world). The second pillar situates EHSDT among field-theoretical, systems-oriented perspectives, framing development as a differential–integrative process propelled by existential tensions and the imaginative reorganization of the multicultural self-system. The third pillar clarifies EHSDT’s distinctive character as a relational developmental perspective, conceptualizing optimal development as a lifelong process of self-cultivation oriented toward cooperative culture creation through a confluence of learning and creating. EHSDT is presented as an inclusive, value-conscious human science perspective with evolving priorities for developmental inquiry. Self-cultivation is proposed as a 21st-century alternative to the concept of self-actualization.
