Enhancing Probability of Detection and Defect Sizing in Guided Wave Testing Using Multi-Frequency Operation

Guided Wave Testing (GWT) is a long-range ultrasonic inspection technique used for screening pipelines and other elongated structures. Unlike conventional ultrasonic testing, in which waves reflect only from the front face of a defect, guided waves reflect from both the leading and trailing edges of a defect. The total reflected amplitude is therefore determined by the constructive or destructive interference of these two reflections, which depends on the relationship between the guided wave wavelength and the axial length of the defect. Maximum reflection occurs when the defect axial length is approximately one quarter of the guided wavelength. At this condition, the reflection coefficient is approximately equal to the cross-sectional area loss of the defect. Because this condition depends on frequency, different defect geometries respond differently to different inspection frequencies. A defect that produces a strong reflection at one frequency may produce a weak or undetectable signal at another. This paper presents the physical basis of frequency-dependent wave-defect interaction in guided wave testing, discusses field inspection examples that demonstrate how different frequencies detect different defects on the same pipeline, and addresses the physical requirements for achieving true multi-frequency operation in guided wave testing systems. The results confirm that multi-frequency operation is not an optional enhancement but a physical necessity for reliable guided wave inspection.
