Albanycada albigera

Albanycada albigera (Walker, 1850) Figs 1, 2, 3 A, B, 5, 6 Platypleura albigera Walker, 1850: 12 [type locality: Cape, clarified as 33°16'S, 26°28'E, a site of known occurrence just north of Makhanda, as motivated below]. ≡ Albanycada albigera (Walker, 1850) (combination by Villet 1989, 61). = Platypleura membranacea Karsch, 1890: 92 pl. III, fig. 10 [type locality: Cap Bona Spei, clarified as 33°16'S, 26°28'E, a site of known occurrence just north of Makhanda, as motivated below] (synonym by Distant 1906, 16; Villet 1989, 61). Remarks. Albanycada albigera was illustrated by Villet (1989: figs 9–10, habitus, photographs; 25, pygofer, drawing). Platypleura membranacea was illustrated by Karsch (1890: pl. III, fig. 10, habitus, drawing) (Fig. 2 C). Platypleura albigera was apparently described from a single female specimen (Walker 1850), nominated below as the lectotype, that was derived from the collection of William Edward Shuckard (1803–1868), a British entomologist who obtained specimens of non-British species from diverse sources. As was common practice in the era when this species was described, Walker’s (1850) description mentioned only the region of origin of the specimen, and the lectotype is now labelled “? Cape ” (Fig. 1 B), so the vague type locality cannot be inferred more exactly from the labels, description, or collector’s details. To clarify (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999 Article 76) the vague meaning of “ Cape ”, it is proposed here that, since P. albigera is a synonym of P. membranacea, the two species should share the same type locality. The syntypes of P. membranacea are now labelled “ Pr [omontorium]. b [ona]. Sp [ei]. ”, meaning Cape of Good Hope. The provision of the syntypes of P. membranacea is credited to Ludwig Krebs (1792–1844) (Karsch 1890), who was the Cape naturalist to the King of Prussia in 1820–1828 and apothecary in Grahamstown in that period, during which he sent 15 significant collections of specimens to the Berlin Museum (ffolliott and Liversidge 1971), including the syntypes, also now labelled “ Cap. Bona Spei ”, of Platypleura hirtipennis (Germar, 1934) (Berlin Museum catalogue number 4270), Platypleura plumosa (Germar, 1834) (also 4270: Villet 1997) and Platypleura divisa (Germar, 1834) (4272), two of which are endemic to the western part of Eastern Cape. Krebs collected in the Sundays River, Albany and Kaffraria regions in 1822 and 1823 (ffolliott and Liversidge 1971), and the syntypes of Germar’s (1834) three species were almost certainly collected during these excursions (Villet 1997), so the locality on the labels of all of these specimens (Fig. 2 B, D, E) is certainly misleading. It is very likely that the specimens were shipped to Germany via Cape Town (ffolliott and Liversidge 1971), which would explain why they became associated with the Cape of Good Hope rather than with what was then known as Kaffraria. Collectively, Krebs’ four species are characteristic of an ecological community of cicadas (Gess 1981) that occurs at a site on the north side of Grahamstown, now Makhanda, so it is very likely that the syntypes of P. membranacea were collected by Krebs near Makhanda; this site (33°16'S, 26°28'E) is therefore hereby fixed as the restricted type locality of this species (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999 Article 76). Abstract
