EFFECTS OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION IN IKEJA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
This study seeks to investigate the effects of atmospheric pollution in Ikeja LGA, Lagos State, with a focus on identifying the sources (causes), evaluating the trend of atmospheric pollution for the period under study (2014-2023), assessing the associated health risks and environmental impact. For this study, two set of data were used; these are primary and secondary data. For the primary data, information was sorted from respondents using a well structured questionnaire while the secondary data for this study were information on atmospheric pollutant data of the study area obtained from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). It was discovered in the course of this study that; 38% of atmospheric pollution is being caused by vehicular emissions, 26% are caused by industrial emissions, 16% are caused by improper waste burning and 20% are as a result of construction activities in the study area. This implies that vehicular emissions, industrial emissions and construction activities are the major causes of atmospheric pollution in the study area. The findings of this study provided valuable insights that will inform policy decisions and contribute to the design of effective pollution control measures in Ikeja and similar urban areas. Hence, the government should ensure that factories that are located close to residential areas strictly conform to guidelines on sustainable practices, relevant agencies should work towards using compresses natural gas as an alternative to petrol and diesel in vehicles, stable electricity and alternative energy sources.
