As the Hourglass Drains: The Global Illicit Sand Extraction Crisis
Global extraction of sand, driven by construction and infrastructure, is now exceeding natural supply. This article explores illegal sand extraction as a widespread issue across countries including India, Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia. It shows that sand mining is often linked to weak regulation, corruption, and enforcement challenges. The environmental impacts are serious, including erosion, habitat loss, and flooding, highlighting the need for stronger governance of sand resources.
