Note on an Inconsistency in the 1905 Derivation of the Relativity of Simultaneity

In Albert Einstein's derivation of the relativity of simultaneity, his conclusion denies the relative-motion premise that was required to generate the differentiation in the first place. That is a contradiction: the text affirms the kinematic premise (rod moves relative to the light events) in order to produce the result, then affirms the negation of that premise as the interpretation of the result. The two cannot both be maintained.

Abstract

In Albert Einstein's derivation of the relativity of simultaneity, his conclusion denies the relative-motion premise that was required to generate the differentiation in the first place. That is a contradiction: the text affirms the kinematic premise (rod moves relative to the light events) in order to produce the result, then affirms the negation of that premise as the interpretation of the result. The two cannot both be maintained.
