A Choreographic Lens to Enliven and Democratise Sociology Tutorials
In-person sociology tutorials are potent sites for generating integrated, collective knowledge encounters for deep learning. Contemporary dance and social choreographic thinking can foreground the politics of how bodies are relationally placed within learning spaces and offer a novel lens for re-viewing practice within tutorials. I was curious whether seeing students as learning bodies that can move might create sociology-in-action, where movement prompts disrupt problematic social hierarchies and patterns that can settle into learning environments. In this Teaching Note, I present choreographic ideas and describe my activity explorations in implementing choreographic thinking to create democratised, opened-up learning encounters within tutorials.
