Community Relations Techniques of Oil Companies in Managing Conflicts: Host Communities’ Preferences, Effectiveness and Constraints in the Niger Delta Region

This study examined the community relations techniques employed by oil companies in managing conflicts with host communities in the Niger Delta Region. The study was anchored on stakeholders theory. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The population comprised sixty-six (66) corporate affairs staff of oil companies and 282,433 residents across some communities in Delta, Edo and Rivers States. A sample of six (6) company staff and 384 residents of the host communities was selected through purposive and opportunity sampling techniques. Data were collected using an interview guide and questionnaire. Validity was ensured through expert review, while a reliability index of 0.78 was obtained using the pilot test method. Data from interviews were analysed using Yin’s explanation building technique, while questionnaire data were analysed using mean scores on a four-point Likert scale. Findings revealed that host communities prefer infrastructural development projects, empowerment programmes, youth employment, and consistent communication with oil companies. The study further showed that community relations techniques help oil companies secure local representation, gather opinions and ensure adherence to Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). However, the study identified constraints including inadequate communication, insufficient community engagement with women and youth groups, and limited consistency in project implementation. The study concluded that while community relations techniques are actively applied and have considerable strength in reducing conflicts, their impact is hindered by poor communication strategies and weak inclusivity. It recommended that oil companies should prioritize sustainable community development projects, youth employment, and open communication channels to meet host community expectations. They should also strengthen community relations frameworks by institutionalizing dialogue, negotiation, and strict adherence to MoUs for long-term mutual trust.
