The Grammar of Belonging
“The Grammar of Belonging” explores language as a site of memory, identity and cultural survival. Through a lyrical meditation on inherited voices, ancestral histories and the politics of naming, the poem examines how languages carry experiences of displacement, colonial encounter and collective belonging. It reflects on the tension between inherited tongues and imposed linguistic structures, suggesting that belonging emerges not from linguistic uniformity but from dialogue among diverse histories and voices. By imagining language as a living archive of memory and resistance, the poem engages with broader questions of multilingual identity, cultural continuity and the relationship between language and power. Situated within literary and cultural studies, the work celebrates the resilience of languages that preserve communities, histories and forms of belonging despite attempts at erasure.
