The 132 Black People Thrown Overboard: A Five-Dimensional Textual Mechanism Analysis of M. NourbeSe Philip's Poetry Collection Zong! Based on Haiji Literature 2.0

Abstract: Based on the perspective of Haiji Literature 2.0, this paper interprets the poetry collection Zong!. Through the analytical model H2.0=f(P, L, B, I, W), the analysis indicates that: I (Imperial Vehicle) in the text of Zong! refers to the slave ship of the historical event, and simultaneously points to a new slave ship constructed by the poet through linguistic reconstruction—the patchwork ship; P (Ontological Position) is not merely the biological position at the bottom of the sea after being thrown overboard—stripped of life and linguistic opportunity—but also a shifting position within the sea of legal language; W (Language Rights): the deprivation of the Black people's African languages, the language of imperial legal documents, Arabic, and the poet's language; L (Labor Extraction): the direct extraction of Black lives in exchange for additional water provisions aboard the ship; B (Ethnic/Belief Boundaries): the African Black people's "generations of skulls and spirits" and the ethnic categorization issued by the legal text, as well as the poet's heterogeneous intervention with non-English vocabulary, which tears apart the legitimate syntax of legal English. Five-Dimensional Interaction: drawing upon the historical event of the slave ship, the legal judgment is deconstructed into a new slave ship pieced together with poetic fragments, implying that the event is not a thing of the past but is constantly recurring under the wheels of history.
