Endolexis v0: Olvasó in a toy world
A small artificial reader, Olvasó, learned to interpret its own inner states through its outer world, starting from nameless numbers, and behaved in five ways the Endolexis theory predicts. In a simulated body with three outer and three inner channels, it (1) found a hidden, delayed link between activity and warmth at about five times chance, while never "reading" a channel of pure noise; (2) discovered its own agency only when it acted often, and read its slow inner life only when it was patient; (3) kept the scars of a restless childhood forever unless its meanings could fade; (4) avoided the superstition that fading brings by keeping a slow memory of doubt; and (5) during sealed sleep read nothing at all, while its recall of a sealed night was composed at waking from the morning's cues, changing with the morning. The whole mind is about 77,000 numbers, learned by local rules from its own life, with no training data and no outside error signal. Code and data: endolexis 0.2.0 (Python, numpy), doi:10.5281/zenodo.23856387; about one minute per experiment.
