Time as Branching: The Possibility–Light Model of a Finite, Closed Universe

We propose an interpretive framework in which time is not a coordinate axis but a derived quantity: the accumulation of irreversible records (branching) along an observer's worldline. The fourth dimension is taken to be a finite ring of possibilities, the number of whose distinguishable points is fixed by the holographic bound; the fifth element is light, understood not as an axis but as the conformal structure obtained by compressing the light cone along its null generators (the celestial sphere). All elements are closed finite structures: rings for one-dimensional axes, spheres for two-dimensional ones. From five axioms we recover the proper time of special relativity as a ratio of record counts, reconstruct the time coordinate from the records of comoving standard clocks, and relate the cosmological constant to the number of distinguishable states of the universe, reproducing the de Sitter entropy formula. The framework reinterprets the Poincaré recurrence and Boltzmann brain problems of a finite universe by declining to count the post-saturation era as time, and it treats time travel as motion between branches rather than rewriting of a fixed past. We state the framework's observational standing frankly. Its predictions (w = −1, a positively curved space, an octahedral spatial topology) are either shared with the standard model or, under current curvature constraints, outside the observable region. We include a self-assessment listing ten objections, four of which we have answered by revising the framework and two of which remain open. The contribution is a unified reading of existing results, not a new physical law. Note: Claude (Anthropic) was used for drafting and editing the text, mapping the ideas onto prior work, order-of-magnitude estimates, and formulating the objections in Section 9. Abstract
