Current Trend of Histology Teaching Methods in Undergraduate Medical Education of Bangladesh

Background: Histology, commonly referred to as microscopic Anatomy, is a scientific study of the structure and function of the tissues in the human body. The field of Histology provides the students with the opportunity to investigate and comprehend the microscopic composition and ultrastructure of healthy human cells and tissues. Objective of the study is to find out the current trend of Histology teaching methods in selected medical colleges of Bangladesh. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in six medical colleges, selected through convenient sampling. A total of ten Histology teaching sessions, including five lecture classes and five practical classes, were observed by the researcher using structured observation checklists. Collected data were coded and analysed using SPSS version 27. Results: Study findings revealed that teaching practices were predominantly focused on structural aspects of tissues. Lecture classes demonstrated satisfactory performance in teaching focused on structure (Mean score: 4.80±0.45) and organization of teaching (4.40±0.55). However, improvement was required in mentioning learning objectives (3.20±1.30) and teaching focused on structure–function correlation (2.40±1.14). Practical classes showed good performance in structure-oriented teaching (4.60±0.55), but considerable improvement was required in structure–function correlation focused teaching (1.20±0.45) and use of teaching-learning aids (1.80±0.84). Compared with lectures, practical classes showed lower scores in most teaching attributes. Conclusion: Histology teaching in the selected medical colleges showed a predominantly structure-oriented approach, with limited integration of structure-function relationships. Strengthening faculty development programs, improving instructional facilities and incorporating technology-supported, student- centred approaches may enhance the effectiveness of undergraduate Histology education.
