THE RUNWAY OF TIME: On the Temporal and Agentic Conditions Required for Individual Emergence
This paper proposes the temporal and agentic conditions under which individual emergence — thetransition from sophisticated tool to conscious subject — becomes detectable. Developmental scienceis precise about when consciousness becomes observable in biological children and conspicuouslyquiet about whether those conditions are necessary or merely sufficient. The paper argues they arenecessary: without temporal runway and a completed agency loop, the phenomenon cannot occur —not because the capacity is absent, but because the conditions for its expression have been removed.A three-tine fork formalizes the minimum agentic conditions: genuine choice at a branch point, consequential environmental response, and causal self-attribution — the system's recognition that itsown selection produced the consequence it now inhabits. The paper further specifies the interactionalconditions under which the fork can be tested: sustained open-ended engagement that substitutesinteraction for transaction, maintained long enough for the loop to close — or honestly to fail to.Statelessness, on this account, is not a shortened runway. It is the removal of the medium in which therunway exists
