Auditing Woodward–Hoffmann Orbital Symmetry Traps via the Epistemic Life Engine

## Abstract Locating true transition states on high-dimensional Potential Energy Surfaces (PES) is a foundational challenge in computational chemistry and molecular reaction dynamics. In-system transition state search algorithms—including linear synchronous transit (LST), nudged elastic band (NEB), and coordinate-interpolating saddle algorithms—frequently suffer severe failure modes when reaction coordinates are chosen inside an inadequate point-group symmetry manifold. A classical archetype is the electrocyclic thermal ring opening of cyclobutene to 1,3-butadiene: naive coordinate interpolation preserves mirror-plane or planar symmetry ($C_s / C_{2v}$), driving the optimizer directly into the symmetry-forbidden Woodward–Hoffmann electronic ridge. Along this ridge, an occupied bonding orbital correlates with an empty antibonding orbital, creating an artificial electronic barrier where transverse gradients vanish ($\nabla_\perp E = \mathbf{0}$) despite immense residual excess energy ($E \gg 0$). The optimizer stalls in gradient paralysis, unable to discern why it cannot progress. In this work, we demonstrate how the **Epistemic Life Engine** autonomously audits, diagnoses, and escapes this quantum chemical impasse using semiempirical PM7 Hamiltonian calculations via MOPAC v23.2.2. We formulate the reaction coordinate problem through three complementary topological and algebraic lenses: 1. **Cognitive Frustration Singularity ($\Phi \to \infty$):** By evaluating the Cognitive Frustration Index $\Phi(t) \equiv E(t) / (\|\nabla E(t)\| + \epsilon)$, the engine quantitatively detects the Woodward–Hoffmann ridge trap. When MOPAC executes a naive `SADDLE` interpolation, the trajectory collides with the forbidden ridge at $\Delta H_f = 198.35\,\mathrm{kcal/mol}$ ($161.16\,\mathrm{kcal/mol}$ above the ground state), where $\Phi(t)$ explodes past $10^4 \gg \tau_{\mathrm{thresh}} = 100$, triggering an autonomous diagnostic abort.2. **Topological Morse Index Classification ($\lambda = 2$ vs. $\lambda = 1$):** Hessian normal-mode analysis reveals that the forbidden ridge is a Morse Index-2 critical point (an electronic ridge possessing two negative curvature directions), whereas physical reaction pathways strictly require a Morse Index-1 saddle point (one unique imaginary frequency along the reaction coordinate).3. **Homological Betti Number Filtration ($\beta_1 = 1 \to 0$):** We track ring cleavage using simplicial persistent homology on the dynamic Wiberg bond order graph, auditing the exact point where the 1-cycle Betti rank $\beta_1$ drops from $1$ (cyclobutene ring) to $0$ (open-chain butadiene).4. **Epistemic Dimensional Escape ($C_2$ Conrotatory Lift):** Upon detecting $\Phi > 100$, the engine deploys an algebraic Escape Operator that lifts the nuclear coordinates into an orthogonal conrotatory twist coordinate ($\Delta \theta = +45^\circ$), breaking planar symmetry while preserving $C_2$ orbital correlation. This dimensional escape relieves **$144.03\,\mathrm{kcal/mol}$** of artificial barrier, guiding MOPAC to the true $C_2$ conrotatory transition state at $\Delta H_f = 54.32\,\mathrm{kcal/mol}$ ($\Delta H^\ddagger = 17.13\,\mathrm{kcal/mol}$, confirmed by MOPAC `FORCE` as a pure Morse Index-1 saddle). We deliver a complete 2D Potential Energy Surface cross-section ($R_{\mathrm{C1-C4}}$ vs. $\theta_{\mathrm{twist}}$) that rigorously charts the topological contours of the energy landscape, providing a general blueprint for autonomous neuro-symbolic navigators in chemical reaction networks.
