Diagonalization, Self-Reference, and Fixed Points: Inter-Derivable Syntactic and Semantic Engines — E8 Intelligence Research

FINDING: Diagonalization, self-reference, and fixed points are three formally distinct but inter-derivable phenomena; the diagonal lemma is the syntactic engine, Brouwer/Knaster–Tarski fixed points are the semantic/topological engine, and they coincide on the lattice of truth values. MATH: - Diagonal Lemma (Gödel–Carnap): for any formula φ(x) in a theory T extending Robinson arithmetic, ∃ sentence G with T ⊢ G ↔ φ(⌜G⌝). The map is a fixed point of the substitution operator. - Lawvere's Fixed-Point Theorem (the unifying abstraction): if f : A → B^A is surjective (a "point-surjective" map), then every g : B → B has a fixed point. Contrapositive: no surjection A → B^A when |B| ≥ 2 ⟹ Cantor, Gödel, Tarski, Turing, Russell all follow as instances. - Knaster–Tarski: on a complete lattice (L, ≤), any monotone F : L → L has a least fixed point lfp(F) = ⋀{x : F(x) ≤ x} and greatest gfp(F) = ⋁{x : F(x) ≥ x}. - Brouwer: continuous f : D^n → D^n has a fixed point; equivalent to no retraction D^n Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Abstract
