Morphometry of the Humeral Trochlea in Adult Bangladeshi Humans: An Anatomical Study

The humeral trochlea is a critical component of the elbow hinge joint and precise knowledge of its dimensions is vital for successful orthopedic reconstructions and forensic profiling. Because most joint prostheses are manufactured based on Western skeletal dimensions, they often mismatch the smaller anatomy of South Asian populations. This cross-sectional, observational study aimed to evaluate the morphometric dimensions of the adult human humeral trochlea in Bangladesh to establish a population-specific baseline database. A total of 100 fully ossified, dry, undamaged adult human humeri (43 right and 57 left) were obtained from the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical Colleges, Mymensingh across Bangladesh. Standard morphometric parameters—including the maximum transverse diameter of the humeral trochlea and the antero-posterior diameter of midpoint of the trochlea of the humerus —were measured using a digital vernier caliper. Data were analyzed statistically by using SPSS version-31. The mean ± SD of maximum transverse diameter of the trochlea was 23.40 ± 2.778 mm on the right side and 23.45 ± 2.458 mm on the left side. The mean ± SD of the antero-posterior diameter of midpoint of the trochlea of the humerus was 15.816 ± 1.470 mm on right side and 14.961 ± 1.289 mm on left side. Characteristically, the overall dimensions of the Bangladeshi humeral trochlea were significantly smaller than documented Western cohorts. In conclusion, the adult Bangladeshi humeral trochlea exhibits distinct, smaller morphometric dimensions and notable regional variance. These native standards provide crucial baseline data for local biomedical engineers designing anatomically compatible elbow prostheses and will guide orthopedic surgeons in achieving precise fracture fixation within the South Asian population.
