How renewable energy integration reshapes smart grid cybersecurity: challenges and future directions

The rapid transition toward renewable-rich smart grids has fundamentally transformed modern power systems by driving the evolution of conventional centralized electricity networks toward more distributed, digitally coordinated, and communication-dependent cyber-physical infrastructures. The widespread deployment of renewable and distributed-energy technologies and coordination platforms, including photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind energy systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electric vehicles (EVs) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) infrastructures, microgrids, and virtual power plants (VPPs), has significantly increased the decentralization, flexibility, and digital connectivity of modern power systems. However, this digital transformation has simultaneously expanded the cyberattack surface of power systems by introducing extensive communication networks, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, cloud platforms, advanced control systems, and distributed automation technologies, creating new cybersecurity challenges that differ substantially from those encountered in conventional power grids. This paper presents a comprehensive review of how renewable energy integration reshapes smart grid cybersecurity by examining the evolution of modern power systems, the expansion of cyberattack surfaces, and the emerging vulnerabilities associated with renewable energy technologies. The review analyzes the cybersecurity challenges across six major renewable and distributed-energy technology domains: PV systems, wind energy systems, BESS, EV/V2G infrastructures, microgrids, and VPPs. It further examines the technical, economic, and environmental impacts of these attacks. In addition, the paper reviews existing cybersecurity strategies developed to protect renewable-integrated smart grids. Finally, future research directions are presented, emphasizing explainable and trustworthy artificial intelligence, digital twins, post-quantum cryptography, and integrated cyber-physical resilience frameworks. By consolidating the latest knowledge on renewable energy cybersecurity, attack vectors, protection strategies, and emerging research directions, this review provides a reference that can support researchers, engineers, utilities, and policymakers in developing the next generation of secure, resilient, and sustainable smart grids capable of supporting the global clean energy transition.
