Mycotoxins Produced by Fusarium spp.: Biosynthesis and Health Impact

Background: This research presents a critical analysis of mycotoxins produced by fungi, particularly the Fusarium genus, which is prevalent in cereal-producing regions. Given the global impact of mycotoxins on food safety and animal health, this study addresses an urgent issue in agricultural science. It highlights the various environmental, physical, and biological factors influencing mycotoxin production, providing valuable insights for developing effective management strategies. The study also discusses the health risks associated with specific mycotoxins, such as zearalenone and fumonisins, which have been linked to serious health issues in both animals and humans. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for ongoing prevention and control programs to mitigate mycotoxin contamination in the food chain. By exploring analytical challenges and proposing future directions for research and policy, this work contributes significantly to the understanding of mycotoxin dynamics in agricultural systems. The findings are essential for stakeholders in the livestock industry, aiming for sustainable practices and economic viability. Objective: This paper reviews the molecular mechanisms of Fusarium mycotoxin biosynthesis under different environmental conditions and the mycotoxin effects on plant metabolism and cytogenetic. Conclusion: The conclusion emphasizes the health risks associated with mycotoxins produced by Fusarium species, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing research and effective management strategies. However, it should also address specific unresolved challenges. The intricate interplay of environmental factors and biosynthetic pathways, along with their implications for human and animal health, highlights the necessity for innovation in agricultural practices, mycotoxin detection, and remediation techniques.
