A Pragmatic Study of the Obedience Concept in Selected Qur’anic Verses
This article is a pragmatic analysis of obedience in selected Qur’anic verses within an integrated context. The lack of integrated pragmatic research on obedience leaves a gap in language and communication regarding how obedience works. Thus, the study aims at identifying the contextual and pragmatic functions in the given expressions of the Glorious Qur’an and the role of context in shaping the intended meanings of these expressions. The study uses a qualitative descriptive analytical approach by adopting Hymes’ SPEAKING Model (1974), Kissene’s Speech Act Theory (2013), and Grice’s Implicature Theory (1975) to analyse four Qur’anic verses that are related to obedience. By analysing these texts, it is concluded that obedience, in the Glorious Qur’an, is full of different speech acts and implicatures that convey many moral obligations, theological concepts, and social obligations. The results indicate that most Qur’anic expressions have indirect meanings and have contextual assumptions to fulfil communicative intentions.
