Spirituality of Relation among Young Catholics in the Light of the Vow of Chastity in Religious Life
This study examines the relational experiences of young Catholics and the ways members of religious communities live out the vow of chastity to develop a framework of relational spirituality relevant to young people’s lives. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive-interpretive approach, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 12 young Catholics and questionnaires completed by 39 young Catholics and nine members of religious communities. The researchers analyzed the data through thematic categorization and theological interpretation informed by Sandra M. Schneiders’ theoretical framework. The findings reveal a tension between young Catholics’ positive assessments of their interpersonal relationships and their experiences of manipulation, exclusive friendships, and difficulties establishing personal boundaries. Members of religious communities, meanwhile, understand chastity through self-dedication to God, affective freedom, and responsibility toward others. A synthesis of 16 findings identifies three dimensions of relational spirituality: sincere friendship, witness through spiritual life, and authentic conduct. These findings provide a conceptual foundation for pastoral accompaniment that integrates affective maturity, inclusive community formation, and responsible digital relationships. The study’s originality lies in extending Schneiders’ interpretation of consecrated celibacy as a charism into a framework of relational spirituality for young Catholics while preserving the distinct vocations of religious and lay Catholics.
