Experiences of solo parents in facing life challenges

Aim: This study explored the lived experiences of solo parents in Magallanes, Sorsogon, particularly the challenges they encounter, the coping strategies they employ, and the sources of support that sustain their well-being and parental responsibilities. It also sought to generate insights that may inform responsive social welfare programs, community-based interventions, and policies for solo parents. Methodology:The study employed a qualitative research design using a phenomenological approach.Seven solo parents participated in the study.Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis following the framework of Braun and Clarke (2022).Results: The findings revealed that solo parents experienced interconnected financial, emotional, parenting, and social challenges while managing multiple roles as caregivers, providers, and household managers.Financial pressure, debt, difficulty meeting children's needs, emotional and physical exhaustion, parenting and child-rearing concerns, social judgment, and limited social interaction were among the major challenges identified.Participants used various coping strategies, including self-preservation, faith-based coping, and commitment to their children, although some also experienced maladaptive coping under prolonged stress.Family members, community networks, and children served as important sources of support, motivation, and hope.Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated resilience through a strong sense of purpose, future-oriented perspectives, and values-driven parenting. Conclusion: Solo parenting involves substantial and interconnected challenges that require sustained social and community support. The findings suggest the importance of strengthening psychosocial services, parenting and stress-management programs, community support networks, and other social welfare interventions responsive to the needs of solo parents. These insights may contribute to the development of more inclusive and responsive local policies and programs that support the well-being of solo parents and their children.
