"Living in a White Privilege Fantasy Land" My Dual White Realities: A Theory of Conditional and Contested Whiteness, and White Supremacist Deterrence: From the Barbeque to the Bullet Scale.
This sociology theory paper develops two new theoretical concepts—Dual White Realities (DWR) and White Supremacist Deterrence (WSD)—to examine how white supremacy may regulate white individuals who challenge racial boundaries and stand in solidarity with people of color. Dual White Realities distinguishes between protected whiteness, where the protections and privileges associated with whiteness remain relatively secure, and contested whiteness, where those protections may become conditional or temporarily suspended when white individuals challenge the racial hierarchy. White Supremacist Deterrence theorizes the disciplinary consequences associated with crossing these racial boundaries and how observing those consequences may deter other white individuals from similar acts of interracial solidarity. These consequences are organized through the Barbeque to the Bullet Scale (BTTBS), a five-level continuum ranging from social ostracism and cultural policing to state surveillance, legal weaponization, targeted physical violence, and homicide. Drawing on existing scholarship on whiteness, racial hierarchy, social control, repression, sanctions, and deterrence, along with historical and contemporary illustrative cases, the paper proposes a new framework for examining the internal regulation of whiteness and the maintenance of racial boundaries in American society.
