South Asian Alternatives to Olive Oil
This review assesses various edible oils, and proposes equivalent alternatives to olive oil. While written from a South Asian perspective, this analysis is relevant for a global audience as well.Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), has a high ω 9 oil content, a high ω 6: ω 3 ratio, and a low smoke point.A combination of groundnut or mustard oil, along with corn, soyabean or sunflower oil, offers high MUFA and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake, with a healthy ω 6: ω 3 ratio, and a taste that is acceptable to most populations.
