Exploring Psychologists' Perceptions on the Integration, Challenges, and Opportunities on the Use of AI Chatbots: A Phenomenological Study

This phenomenological qualitative study explored the perceptions of psychologists regarding the integration, challenges, and opportunities presented by AI Chatbots in therapy and counseling. Guided by a main problem with six sub-problems, the study aimed to understand how AI Chatbots were perceived in terms of their functionality, ethical implications, and potential contributions to mental healthcare. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven licensed psychologists who had prior experience with AI tools in practice. Thematic analysis revealed three themes and twenty-three sub themes: (1) Integration of AI Chatbots, which highlights their usefulness in enhancing efficiency through data collection, psychoeducation, and task automation, while raising concerns about reduced human connection and weakened therapeutic alliance; (2) Challenges in the Use of AI Chatbots, which include issues related to data privacy, emotional limitations, cultural sensitivity, algorithmic bias, and over-reliance on automation; and (3) Opportunities of AI Chatbots in Therapy, which identifies benefits such as improved access to care, support for heavy caseloads, and tools for psychoeducation and guided self-help. The study concluded that AI chatbots may serve as valuable adjuncts in mental health practice if implemented with ethical safeguards, human oversight, and professional training. Recommendations include developing clear guidelines and expanding future research on chatbot applications across diverse populations.
