WHEN THEORY BECOMES ART

The proposition that theory itself can become art should not be understood as the conversion of abstract explanation into a novel aesthetic object, because the decisive transformation occurs when a theory intervenes in the procedures through which objects, observations, differences, and receivers first become possible, thereby changing not only what an observer knows but the operational conditions under which something can be recognized as an object of knowledge or art. Beginning with Marcel Duchamp's readymades and the deliberately nonsequential documentary apparatus of The Green Box, this article argues that the Duchampian displacement of artistic production from manual fabrication to a reorganization of designation and reception can be extended, without collapsing art into scientific authority, toward an experimental conception of theory as an operative artwork. The Biological Xeno Coefficient (BXC) supplies a particularly demanding case because its released v0.3 architecture distinguishes five non-scalar evidentiary coordinates—Structural Persistence (P_S), Receiver Alteration (A_R), Historical Dependence (H_D), Transformational Robustness (T_R), and Morphogenetic Consequence (M_C)—while its prospective v0.4 program asks whether, and only under stringent matched-system conditions, an unweighted support count K might retain sufficient information for subsequent independent scalar validation. The article develops the distinction between measuring a transformation and allowing the act of measurement to transform the architecture of reception; it then proposes the protocol-work, a reproducible artistic and research form composed of frozen interventions, source histories, negative findings, failed gates, and receiver-dependent acts of interpretation. Such a work cannot borrow biological evidence to certify literary effects, nor can it turn an unvalidated K into an aesthetic ranking. Its critical force instead lies in making the construction and possible alteration of the receiver available as an operation that can fail, be repeated, and be contested. Theory becomes art, on this account, not when it asserts that everything is art, but when its execution produces a new problem of reception whose consequences cannot be settled by the interpretive authority of an already established reader.
