Working Paper 08: The Sound of Feelings: Detailed Deck
Detailed deck for Working Paper 08, The Sound of Feelings: Affective Timbre and Music as a Model of Affect, Feeling, and Emotion, from How to Design an Emotion (Universal Moral Concepts II) by Cézjah (New Intellectual LLC). Abstract. Three problems remain open once emotion is understood as an interpretation of feeling. Hedonic tone cannot account for the full qualitative character of a feeling; emotion theory still blurs bodily mechanism, conscious feeling, and emotion; and an emotional category must hold very different instances together without a shared essence. Music answers all three, not as decoration but as a working model of the levels of emotional life. Affective timbre is the qualitative character through which a feeling presents itself beyond how pleasant or unpleasant it is, and musical genre models the emotional category: varied instances held together by constraint rather than essence.
