Helios Polar Network (HPN): An Integrated Lunar Polar Freight, Solar Generation and Energy-Exchange Architecture
The Helios Polar Network (HPN) is a conceptual lunar infrastructure architecture proposing the progressive development of an interconnected freight transportation, solar-energy generation, storage and distribution network across the Moon’s polar regions. The concept centres on a terrain-adaptive primary logistics corridor, potentially evolving into an approximately 600 km circum-polar network, with secondary feeder roads connecting lunar habitats, mining operations, resource-processing facilities, landing sites and industrial infrastructure. The proposed architecture incorporates autonomous electric freight vehicles, bidirectional transport operations, distributed battery-exchange facilities, strategically positioned solar farms, elevated and mast-mounted solar arrays, and optional regenerative hydrogen–oxygen energy-storage systems. Potential configurations also include regional electrical interconnections and long-distance power transmission, allowing energy generated in illuminated locations to support operations in shadowed regions. Long-term conceptual development could involve approximately 20–30 distributed logistics and energy hubs around an initial polar network, followed by additional interconnected transport corridors and progressively larger circumferential networks extending toward lower lunar latitudes. This white paper integrates architectural descriptions, conceptual diagrams, preliminary terrain-routing investigations using NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter LOLA elevation data, exploratory illumination modelling, energy-storage sensitivity studies and phased infrastructure development scenarios. The document is presented as a public conceptual systems-architecture and prior-art disclosure, intended to establish and communicate the proposed integrated infrastructure arrangement, encourage independent scientific evaluation, and support future research and technological development. The investigations are preliminary and do not constitute experimental validation, a construction-ready design or proof of economic feasibility. Further research is required to establish terrain suitability, illumination reliability, vehicle performance, energy requirements and comparative infrastructure benefits.
