IL-1b contributes to cardiovascular disease in man.

High CRP is one the few known indicators of elevated risk for heart attack and cardiovascular disease. We present a hypothesis suggesting an elevated background level of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1b supports cardiovascular disease. We demonstrate by studying total transcription in the blood in humans with low and high CRP that interleukin-1b is specifically enriched in the blood of humans with high CRP.

Abstract

High CRP is one the few known indicators of elevated risk for heart attack and cardiovascular disease. We present a hypothesis suggesting an elevated background level of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1b supports cardiovascular disease. We demonstrate by studying total transcription in the blood in humans with low and high CRP that interleukin-1b is specifically enriched in the blood of humans with high CRP.
