The Arabic Edition of Tricontinental, Beirut 1982: A Reconstruction

For a few months in 1982, Tricontinental, the bimonthly magazine of the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL), also appeared in Arabic. It was edited in Havana and produced in Beirut. Of the four languages its colophon then named, it was the only one not printed in Havana. Earlier literature mentions it in a sentence or a footnote, and no library catalogue lists a copy. This working paper reconstructs the edition from contemporary sources: notices in the Beirut dailies As-Safir and An-Nahar (1981–1982), the magazine’s own colophons and subscription pages (issues 79 to 86), broadcasts of Radio Havana, Radio Damascus and the Voice of Palestine preserved in the translations of United States government monitoring services (1981–1982), a citation in the Beirut journal Shu’un Filastiniyya in 1983, a photograph of a copy of issue 79 posted online in 2026, the recollections of the designer Rafael Enríquez, and later statements by two of the magazine’s own staff. Three Arabic issues are documented: 79, 80 and 81; the evidence is strongest for 79 and 81. The paper traces the preparation through OSPAAAL delegations to Syria and Lebanon in April and October 1981, when the PLO publicly promised its support. It describes the contents of issue 81 section by section, names the people involved in Havana and Beirut, documents Dar al-Farabi as the named distributor in Lebanon at eighteen Lebanese pounds a year, and discusses the edition’s own cover. The edition did not survive the Israeli invasion of June 1982, and earlier accounts link its end to the war and the bombing of Beirut. Whether it had already stopped shortly before, as its designer remembers, the documents do not settle. The paper ends with the questions that remain open and with the places where surviving copies might still be found.
