SOCIAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM IN STRENGTHENING MILLENNIAL FAMILY RESILIENCE UNDER ISLAMIC FAMILY LAW

Social media has become an integral part of millennial family life in the digital era. Its presence is not merely a communication tool but a new social and cultural environment that influences how individuals understand relationships, roles, and existence within the family. In this context, technological determinism, as articulated by Marshall McLuhan, provides an analytical foundation for understanding how media not only carry messages but become the message itself—transforming social structures and shaping collective human perception. This study examines the impact of social media on millennial family resilience through McLuhan’s technological determinism and the concept of family resilience in Islamic family law. Using a qualitative method with a normative sociological approach, it analyzes McLuhan’s works such as Understanding Media and The Medium is the Message, alongside classical and contemporary fiqh sources as primary normative references. The findings indicate that social media disrupts value structures within the family—physically, socially, and psychologically. Family resilience becomes fragile as orientations shift from substance to image and from real communication to simulated interaction. From the perspective of Islamic family fiqh, this situation contradicts the principles of sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah, which serve as the core pillars of the household. Therefore, ethical and spiritual awareness is needed to navigate digital transformation so that the family remains a safe and meaningful space. This study is expected to provide an initial contribution to developing a digital ethic rooted in Islamic values to safeguard family resilience amid technological change.
