Neologisms and abbreviations: the interaction of word-formation processes in modern linguistics

The article analyzes the interaction of neologisms and abbreviations in word formation in modern Uzbek language. The relevance of the theme is determined by the growing flow of new words and abbreviations driven by rapid changes in science, technology and education. The study aims to identify and classify the relationship between these two phenomena. It relies on descriptive, comparative-analytical and classification methods, and the material consists of widely used Uzbek neologisms and abbreviations. The results show three types of connection: the name of a new concept turning into an abbreviation; an abbreviation becoming an independent word through grammatical adaptation and word formation; and the emergence of blended units formed by shortening (for example, webinar). The article proposes viewing the two phenomena as two directions of a single process. The discussion addresses practical problems such as spelling ambiguity, identical abbreviations with different meanings, and the lag in standardization. The findings can be used in lexicography, in improving orthographic norms, and in policies for the assimilation of new words.
