Bridging the Gap in Sexual Health Education in Indian Undergraduate Medical Training: A Critical Viewpoint
Sexual health is part of holistic care, yet published evidence indicates that it is inconsistently represented in the medical education system. In India, the undergraduate competency-based curriculum includes reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), communication, ethics, and professionalism across different subjects, but it does not identify sexual health as a standalone competency domain. This viewpoint maps relevant curriculum content and proposes feasible additions in sexual history-taking, counselling, and respectful care for sexual and gender minority patients. The recommendations are based on National Medical Commission (NMC) curriculum documents and peer-reviewed evidence on sexual-health education.
