Process Responsive Theory: Value Generation Through Unobserved Transformational Regions

Process Responsive Theory (PRT) is a theoretical framework explaining how audiences generate value through the reconstruction of partially hidden transformations rather than through outcomes alone. The theory introduces the concept of the Unobserved Transformational Region (UTR), defined as a partially unobserved transformational space situated between observable states of change. Contrary to traditional outcome-centered approaches, PRT proposes that legitimacy, elegance, authenticity, depth, awe, ownership, and related forms of valuation emerge through active inferential reconstruction of hidden transformational processes. Drawing upon social psychology, cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, narrative theory, and aesthetics, the framework presents a unified model of process-based value generation. The paper further develops concepts including transformational completion, reconstructability, objective and subjective UTRs, positive and defensive UTR responses, and a comprehensive Value Generation Matrix. PRT shifts analytical focus from static objects to transformations connecting observable states and provides a general explanatory framework for understanding how audiences co-create meaning and value through interaction with unobserved transformational regions.
