FLOOD HAZARD ASSESSMENT USING ARCGIS AND

This project presents a GIS-based approach to flood hazard assessment and mitigation in the Pazhayar River Basin, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. Rainfall and catchment area data were analysed to estimate surface runoff using the Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN) method. A Curve Number of 85 and 35% percolation for alluvial soil conditions were considered in the hydrological assessment.Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data were used in ArcGIS to analyse terrain characteristics, flow direction, flow accumulation and watershed delineation. The spatial analysis helped identify low-lying areas and potential flood-prone zones within the basin. Based on the estimated runoff and terrain characteristics, diversion channels were proposed as a structural mitigation measure to redirect excess runoff away from vulnerable areas. The project demonstrates the application of GIS-based spatial analysis and hydrological methods in identifying flood hazards and developing suitable mitigation strategies for sustainable watershed management and disaster risk reduction.
